Post Match Verdict (Lyon -A-)

Matic Got the Last Laugh

When Onana said, “I think we are better than them,” it raised eyebrows. Then Matic came in swinging—saying it doesn’t sit right when “the worst goalkeeper in United’s history” says something like that. And honestly? He had a point. Onana fired back, reminding everyone he’s won two trophies in two seasons—while Matic didn’t win any during his five-year spell. Fair play on the comeback, but let’s be real—it all felt unnecessary.

Personally, I don’t think Onana should’ve said anything before the game. Especially not that. We’re nowhere near consistent, and in a high-pressure Europa League quarter-final, you just don’t give the opposition bulletin board material. And coming from Onana, who hasn’t exactly been solid—wasn’t the best look.

And like clockwork, we conceded two silly goals. Poor positioning, soft hands, bad parrying—you name it. Matic must’ve been grinning. This is why you don’t talk when you’re not delivering. Now all we can hope for is a better showing in the return leg.

Overall Performance

Aside from the mess at the back, the overall showing wasn’t terrible. Midfield held its own, defense was okay at times, and Yoro was a standout. His headed goal was class—confident, sharp, and powerful. I like him at LCB. MOTM for me, with Bruno not far behind.

But going forward? We need answers. Højlund was invisible again. We lack experience and presence up top. Talk of Liam Delap doesn’t excite me—8 goals for Hull and 12 for a mid-table PL side won’t cut it at United. We don’t need another talented kid who needs 2 seasons to grow. We need someone who can command the box now.

Zirkzee, even though he’s not a natural 9, offers more than Højlund. That whole 9.5 label fits him—he links up play, pulls defenders, gets involved. I’d start him next leg without question.

Big Return Leg Next Week

Old Trafford needs to turn up next Thursday. Big time.

After the goalkeeping howlers and defensive mishaps, we need the crowd loud, the players locked in, and the mindset reset. This is one of the biggest games since last year’s FA Cup final vs City. We pulled off a miracle then—we’ll need one again now.

If we don’t show up from the first minute, we’re out.

Time to Prioritize

Amorim, bench key players for the Newcastle game. Please.

Premier League is done. Top 5 is out of reach. There’s no point risking injuries now. Rest Zirkzee. Rest Bruno. Even give Yoro a breather. Give some academy lads a go—they’ve earned it.

But knowing Amorim, he’ll probably go full strength. He treats every match like a final, and while I respect that, we’ve got to play it smart. This isn’t FIFA Career Mode—squad management matters.

Let’s see what he does.
