Final showing before Bilbao

So that was it. Our second last Premier League game of the season, away at Stamford Bridge. No goals. No real fight. Just 90 minutes of flat football. United looked like they’d mentally left for Spain already — and honestly, who can blame them?
The game was pointless in terms of the table. No Champions League to fight for, no top-four race. But what bothered me wasn’t the result — it was the lack of intensity. The Europa League final is just around the corner, and this was not the kind of performance you want going into a match of that magnitude.
Performance? What performance?
From the first whistle, we looked like we were just trying to get through the game without picking up injuries. No urgency, no rhythm. Chelsea weren’t amazing either, but they were sharper. More direct. They looked like a team that wanted to finish strong, while we looked like we were just waiting for the full-time whistle.
The midfield felt lifeless. Even when Bruno was not rested? we couldn’t really grab the game. Mount, especially, drifted in and out. He’s had a few good moments recently, but this one was a bit of a ghost appearance. Up top, Hojlund barely had anything to work with. Amad had a few flashes but was double-marked out of the game most of the time.
Bigger picture is even more worrying
With the Europa League final still ahead, the only thing that matters now is not picking up injuries (which we didn’t). But that doesn’t mean we should be putting in these lifeless performances. Fans travel, fans tune in — they deserve better.
There’s also the bigger question. What’s the actual identity of this team? We’ve seen exciting, brave football in Europe. But the league form has been flat-out unacceptable. Game after game, we look like a side stuck between ideas. The manager looks frustrated, the players look burnt out.
And honestly, it shows.
Eyes on Bilbao
A boring, forgettable game at Stamford Bridge. No fire, no identity, and nothing much to take away — apart from Maguire nearly pulling off something unexpected. We looked toothless up front, and honestly, it didn’t feel like a team gearing up for a European final. But maybe that’s the calm before the storm. I’ll be posting a Scripts post – a guide for fans travelling to OT For match, plus a full pre-final blog with predicted lineups and emotions. Just hope we don’t go there and hand Spurs their first European trophy.
YANITED, YANITED.
