Post Match Verdict 25/26 (Gameweek 30)

Bruno Chases History As United Battle Past Villa: Full Match Verdict

So Aston Villa it was today. I went into this expecting us to get the win. Like I have said previously, we absolutely love playing against these types of teams. They are a bit open and they do not just sit back in a low block. That plays right into our hands.

A Surprise Up Top

The first surprise of the day was seeing Sesko completely dropped from the starting eleven. Personally, I am not super mad or sad about it. I feel like Michael Carrick really prefers a fluid front three of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo. They can interchange positions effortlessly. Plus, against a team that leaves gaps, having that much mobility is definitely not a bad thing.

First Half Frustrations

The game started off quite open. There was a lot of space to cover, and I immediately grew confident. But honestly, after the first 10 minutes, it felt like we were not looking super fresh or sharp. We were missing that electric spark we had during the first two games with Carrick in charge. The clever patterns of play and the rapid quick passes were just not there. Was it just a new manager bounce? We do not know yet.

At the 17th minute, Cunha put an amazing cross into the box for Amad. Sadly, Amad was just a bit too small to get to it, but it was our first real chance created. Over the next 5 minutes, we racked up two or three corners. One of the corners led to a really solid save by Dibu Martinez. The game started to stretch. I feel this is always good for us. We heavily rely on the counter attack.

But from the 20th to the 35th minute, it felt incredibly boring. We had more of the ball, but it was just side to side passes. At around the 37th minute, Diogo Dalot found himself with a close chance but completely skied it. The first half ended, and we were just okay. Apart from that one big chance, we did not see much from United. We only play one game a week right now. Despite this, we still cannot seem to do better than this in the first half. This match was so important to win since we share the same points with Villa. A win would put us above them, so I was really hoping we would show up in the second half.

The Second Half Rollercoaster

The second half started with exactly what we needed. Bruno Fernandes wins the ball back and United break on the counter. Bruno passes it to Mbeumo, who takes a shot from a very tough angle. It was still a fantastic shot on target. Martinez manages to save it. He parries it out for a United corner.

Bruno takes the corner, and the ball reaches exactly who you think it would. Casemiro. Of course, it is Casemiro. He puts it away beautifully. That makes it 15 assists for Bruno and 7 goals for Casemiro this season. Bruno now needed 5 more to tie the single season assist record. Both players have been so vital for United this season. Even after the goal, I knew we would have to go for another one. The game still felt tough. It was nowhere near as easy as I expected.

The Scare and The Masterclass

At the 64th minute, disaster struck. We concede a terrible goal to Ross Barkley, which dragged Villa right back into the game. It was their very first shot on target. We completely lost our momentum after scoring our goal, and there was absolutely no one marking Barkley at the back. After that goal, Villa almost grabbed their second immediately. We lost our heads and Villa were suddenly playing with total confidence.

But then, Bruno did what Bruno does. He delivered another assist, and I do not even want to talk about how good the pass was. It was just pure perfection. Cunha got on the end of it with a beautifully calm finish. That brings Bruno to 16 assists in the Premier League. He only has 4 more to go to tie the record, and 5 to break it. Ruben Amorim made a massive mistake ever playing him so deep. Bruno should have played as a pure attacking midfielder.

Sesko Seals the Deal

At the 73rd minute, Sesko was brought on for Mbeumo. Mbeumo was clearly not happy with Carrick’s decision, but I actually like it. There should be intense competition for spots in this team. I am perfectly happy seeing a bit of sadness from a player coming off.

By the 80th minute, Sesko proved his worth. He does exactly what he does best coming off the bench. He has been in great form and he creates his own chances. Cunha makes a sharp pass inside the box. The ball bounces off a Villa player and ricochets wildly. Sesko pounces on it, takes his chance, and shoots. The ball takes a deflection but somehow crosses the line. 3 to 1. This finally felt like a done deal. We just needed to hold on and not concede again.

And the game ended exactly like that. 3 to 1. Good game, good result.

Looking Ahead

Next up is Bournemouth. This is another game I fully expect us to win. Bournemouth loves to play a high press. They attack a lot. This approach means we are going to get loads of chances to exploit the space they leave behind. Till Next time, YANITED YANITED.
