United 2-1 Brentford: Three Points, Bruno’s Record Chase, And Lammens Saving Us Again

A Good Start That Actually Needed To Count

The lineups came out and it was mostly what we expected. Cunha was out injured, Amad started on the left, Mbeumo was on the right, and Sesko led the line. Shea Lacey being on the bench was nice to see as well, because if United ever got into a comfortable position, it would have been good to give him some minutes. Obviously, with United, “comfortable position” is usually a dangerous phrase, but still, it was good to see him involved.

The big thing for me again was Bruno. I know I keep mentioning the assists record, but I do not care because it is genuinely massive. He came into this game on 18 Premier League assists, and I really wanted him to get at least one more here. This guy deserves that record. He is the only proper world-class player in this United side, and sometimes I feel people do not fully understand what he is doing because the team around him is not always at that level. If he was doing this for City, with players like Haaland, Aguero, Semenyo, or all the ridiculous attackers they have had over the years, he would be in Ballon d’Or conversations. That is not even me exaggerating. Put Bruno in a cleaner, more ruthless attacking side and people would speak about him completely differently.

The match actually started quite positively. United pressed well, looked sharp, and in the first ten minutes we created some good moments. It was not perfect, but the energy was there, and that mattered after the last few games. Then in the 11th minute, Maguire headed the ball perfectly across the far post, and Casemiro put it past Kelleher to make it 1-0. That was exactly the kind of goal you want early in a game like this. Simple, direct, and a little bit old-school. Maguire using his head properly, Casemiro arriving, United ahead. No overthinking needed.

Bruno Was Creating, But Lammens Was Keeping Us Alive

In the first 20 minutes, Bruno created two really good chances, and it was honestly annoying that neither counted properly, either because they were not converted or because of offside. But the signs were there. Brentford were not sitting in a low block and making it completely boring, which actually helped us. They were trying to play with the ball, and that usually gives United more space to attack. We tend to look better against teams that leave gaps rather than teams that just sit there and ask us to solve everything slowly.

But after the first 15 or 20 minutes, Brentford started to bring more composure into the game. They began dominating the ball a bit more, and suddenly it did not feel as comfortable as the scoreline suggested. They had four shots on target, and Lammens saved all of them. I keep saying this, but he is such a calm and collected goalkeeper. There is something about him that makes the back line feel safer, even when the team in front of him is not exactly helping.

Honestly, if it was not for Lammens, we could have been level or even behind by half-time. That is not being dramatic. Brentford had proper moments, and he kept us in the game. It is strange because he always seems to concede absolute bangers, so you cannot even blame him for a lot of the goals he lets in. But apart from that, he gives you that feeling of control. With Bayindir likely to leave, we definitely need to focus on getting a second goalkeeper, because Lammens is clearly the one now.

Bruno To Sesko, Nineteen Assists, And A Proper United Break

Then came the 43rd minute, and this was probably my favourite moment of the match. United were hitting Brentford on the break, Bruno had the ball, and he could have gone either side. Sesko was on the left, Mbeumo was on the right, and Bruno also had a pretty good chance to shoot himself. On another day, I think he probably takes the shot. But with the record on the line, you could almost see him thinking about the pass.

He gave it to Sesko, and Sesko did really well. He dribbled past the defender and scored to make it 2-0 United. And more importantly, that was Bruno’s 19th Premier League assist. Nineteen. I repeat, nineteen Premier League assists. That is insane. He is now properly close to the record, and with the games still left, he has to get there. He just has to.

That goal felt huge because Brentford had started to grow into the game, and United needed something before half-time. At 1-0, the match still felt uncomfortable. At 2-0, it felt like we had given ourselves enough breathing room. But again, this is United, so even when we are two goals up, you never fully relax. You just start calculating all the possible ways the game can become stupid.

The Second Half Was Dull, And That Still Worries Me

The second half was honestly dull. United did not do much, and that worries me a little. This team is playing one game a week right now, so why do we still look flat for such large spells? I do not understand it. If we actually get Champions League football and have to play midweek games, plus domestic cups, what happens then? Because you cannot keep having these long periods where the team just stops looking fresh.

Amad coming off at half-time for Mazraoui was also telling. That kind of substitution says a lot. From being one of the best players under Amorim last season to struggling this badly now, it is genuinely confusing. I think he only has two league goals this season, and I do not know what has happened to him. He has had chances, he has had minutes, but he just has not really shown enough. I still like him as a player, but right now it feels like something is missing.

Casemiro had a good game though, and so did Kobbie. Kobbie needs to sign that new deal as soon as possible, because he is too important to let the situation drag. It will be interesting to see what United do with the midfield next season. Who replaces Casemiro long-term? Who actually pairs with Kobbie? I really hope it is not Tonali. I do not know why, but I just do not feel fully convinced by that idea for this United team.

Jensen’s Banger Made It Nervy, But The Result Matters

Then Jensen scored in the 87th minute, and of course it had to be a banger. That is the thing with Lammens. He saves almost everything he should save, keeps us in games, looks calm, and then the goals he concedes are usually some ridiculous strike where you cannot even fault him properly. This was another one of those. Annoying, yes. His fault, not really.

The final minutes got a bit nervy, but also a little funny because Casemiro was clearly taking the piss near the corner flag in added time. Diving around, winning fouls, annoying Brentford players, just doing experienced-player things. It was clever, and honestly, after everything United have put us through this season, I will take any bit of game management we can get.

Overall, I am very happy with the result. It was not a perfect performance. Lammens kept us in it, the second half was too flat, and United still have that habit of making comfortable situations feel slightly uncomfortable. But we won. Casemiro scored, Sesko scored, Bruno got his 19th assist, and United kept the momentum going after that huge Chelsea win.

At this stage of the season, that is what matters. We can analyse the flaws, and there are definitely flaws, but three points are three points. The Champions League race is still alive, Bruno is chasing history, and United did the job. For once, that is enough.
